If you hear the term “thinning hair,” what do you imagine? Most people think about men dealing with increasingly disappearing headlines who just need to go ahead and shave. Because of this persistent stereotype, it’s easy to forget a simple fact: men aren’t the only ones dealing with thinning hair!

The truth is, this happens to women all the time. Unfortunately, few women want to talk about the matter because they think it’s embarrassing. That means that if you struggle with this issue, you might mistakenly believe you’re the only woman dealing with it. But you aren’t alone: in fact, some of the biggest female actors and musicians have spoken publicly about their struggles with hair loss.

Keep reading to learn about who these women are and how they managed their thinning hair!

Addams Family star Christina Ricci lost hair after having a baby

Christina Ricci has been in a number of high-profile film and television roles over the years. However, fans of a certain age will always remember her for playing Wednesday in the ‘90s Addams Family movies. Long before Jenna Ortega danced her way into our hearts, it was Ricci who showed us just how hilarious a gloomy goth girl can be!

However, there was nothing funny about the hair loss she experienced. Like many women, her hair started thinning after she gave birth to a child. She went into perimenopause right after that, and this made things even worse. Fortunately, her story has a happy ending: her husband recommended a hair growth supplement, and Ricci later claimed it was very effective. Now, her hair looks thick and lustrous for onscreen appearances, including her fan-favorite appearance in the first season of Wednesday!

Talk show icon Ricki Lake ended up shaving her head

Ricki Lake isn’t as big a name as some of the women on this list. However, back in the ‘90s, she was the true queen of off-kilter talk shows. Sure, you’d tune into Oprah if you wanted some inspirational content to keep you going throughout the day. But if you enjoyed messy drama (it’s not just me, right?), then Ricki Lake was your girl. At the time, she seemed like she was on top of the world, but she later revealed that she had struggled with hair loss for decades, and this ended up taking her to some fairly dark places.

In a post on Instagram, she wrote that her hair loss “has been debilitating, embarrassing, painful, scary, depressing, lonely, all the things. There have been a few times where I have even felt suicidal over it.” In that same post, she revealed a shaved head, and many thought this look might be the new normal for this talk show maven. However, she popped up one year later on Good Morning America with a full head of very silver hair, encouraging women to embrace aging rather than try to look eternally youthful.

Rihanna faced the same issue

On paper, there aren’t that many similarities between Rihanna and Christina Ricci. They are different ages, different races, and work in different fields. But they have one powerful thing in common: both women faced hair loss after giving birth to a child. Rihanna experienced major postpartum hair thinning, and she was shocked at the exact way this impacted her body. As reported by People, she said, “”I didn’t expect it to happen in waves. I thought it would just happen and grow back. At that point, you’re just like alright enough is enough.”

She tried a number of different solutions to combat her thinning hair, but she eventually decided the best solution was simply changing the look of her locks. This consisted of several strategies, including leaning into her naturally curly look. Between the haircare products (from her own beauty empire, no less) and the changed styles, she now looks more beautiful than ever before!

Kristin Davis got proactive about hair loss

Kristin Davis became famous thanks largely to her starring role in Sex and the City. Her hair always looked fabulous in that show, which is part of why it was so tragic when her hair started to thin out. In a 2017 WWD interview, she got very real about how she felt: “My hair just was not what it used to be,” she said. “It was very fine, like it had gone away, there just was hardly any hair there….I hadn’t been worrying about it — I have my daughter — but when I tried to do something or had to go somewhere I was like, ‘where is my hair?'”

Eventually, she embraced a volumizing haircare system named Volaire. She loved the results so much that she eventually became a global ambassador for the brand. Davis makes for a great ambassador, incidentally: one look at her glorious head of hair, and you can tell how well Volaire really works!
